Prologue: “Just Another Day”

Narrator

It’s mid-morning, six days before the cataclysm.

[ Comment (0) ]

A deadly fight is underway. It’s unfolding in a hallway lined with prison cells. There’s been a cave-in at one end of the hallway, rendering it inaccessible. The damage is fresh as dust and rubble are still in motion. The other end of the hallway hosts the only exit.

[ Comment (1) ]

The battle is grisly. Four of eight are on the ground. One of which, a woman, is decapitated.

[ Comment (1) ]

Another, a man, lays in front of the doorway. His skin is covered in yellow scales; His fingers have been replaced with long, thick claws. They are sticky with blood.

[ Comment (0) ]

A woman towers above the man with yellow scales. She is twice his height and of the others.

[ Comment (1) ]

There are three of them: a woman with a translucent battle axe, a man with glowing eyes, and a man with a machete.

[ Comment (0) ]

The giant woman heaves a boulder down the hallway at the others. The boulder, a chunk of concrete like a half-barrel keg, soars past the woman with the battle axe, knocks down the man with glowing eyes, and barely misses the man with a machete, before joining the debris of the cave-in.

[ Comment (1) ]

Upon hitting the ground, the man with glowing eyes is struck by a blade. The machete – made for combat – hacks through his neck and spine. His head flops over. Blood gushes on and over the blade.

[ Comment (0) ]

Back at the doorway, the giant woman screams. She reels in pain. Red vapors fume from her neck. She claws at her shoulders, then grabs at the air behind her. Another woman, once invisible, is now revealed. She has a bright blue mohawk.

[ Comment (0) ]

The woman with the mohawk is straddling the giant. Her legs are wrapped around the giant’s waist. Her hands are gripping the giant’s neck; causing the vapors, causing the pain. The giant grabs hold of mohawk woman and throws her to the ground.

[ Comment (0) ]

The woman with the battle axe charges the giant. Her axe is translucent and smoke-like as she winds up.

[ Comment (0) ]

The giant is about to stomp on mohawk woman but battle axe woman whirls her blade. It connects with the giant’s leg; the one on which she’s standing. The blade slides through and the giant falls over. She smashes her head hard on the prison bars. Even though the blade went right through the leg, it shows no visible damage.

[ Comment (0) ]

Battle axe woman raises her weapon. She brings it down upon the giant’s head. Like before, the blade slides through but there’s no visible damage. The giant’s body goes completely limp.

[ Comment (0) ]

Battle axe woman turns. Her weapon is ready for attack. She faces the man holding the machete. He stands at the other end of the hallway staring, motionless. Mohawk woman rises to her feet and joins battle axe woman in facing the machete man.

[ Comment (0) ]

A growl erupts from the doorway. The man with yellow scales is rushing the women. They turn to defend but it’s too late. Yellow scaled man’s long claws tear through the mohawk woman.

[ Comment (0) ]

Battle axe woman winds up to attack, but it’s in vain. He tackles her and they fall to the floor. They continue to brawl. She punches him, landing a fist in his chin but he’s unfazed. He gains the advantage and plants his knee into her gut. She buckles. She’s winded. He pins down her arm with his other knee. He grabs her throat with one hand. She chokes. She flails her free hand. It’s futile. He raises his free hand. He aims his long claws toward her head. Gore drips from them and clumps on her face.

[ Comment (0) ]

Yellow Scaled Man

Huwah! It’s over for you, Vonkelgore!

[ Comment (0) ]

Narrator

He cocks his arm. Final blow. But no! Before he can strike, a machete pierces his eye. The blade bores deep into his socket and becomes embedded. Yellow scaled man jumps on his feet. He paws his hands at the protruding blade. His body trembles.

[ Comment (0) ]

The battle axe woman, Vonkelgore, jumps to her feet. She whirls the translucent battle axe. It moves through yellow scaled man’s body, upward, from his groin through his head. He becomes limp, his body crumples to the ground.

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore spins around, attacking the air. She stares at the machete man. He stands a few paces back, out of the reach of her battle axe. He is now unarmed. They are the only two left alive in the hallway.

[ Comment (0) ]

Her cherubic face is serious while his tattooed face is stoic. Her hair, short and spiky is matted with blood. His hair, a pompadour of blonde curls, is covered in dust. She speaks.

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

Stay right the fuck there.

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Where else am I going to go?

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

You know what I mean, shitbrain. You move, you die.

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Shitbrain, huh?

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

Why’d ya’ kill those two?

[ Comment (0) ]

Narrator

She motions toward the decapitated bodies.

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

What the fuck’s it matter to you? They’re dead.

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

I could kill you with a hop and a chop you piece of shit. Answer me!

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Fucking-A! Fine. Why’d I kill those two? Let’s see. Well. That first melo? She had that blade and I needed a weapon. So I took it.

[ Comment (0) ]

Narrator

He points to the machete stuck in the yellow scaled man’s head.

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

She didn’t like that too much, as expected. And I did what was necessary.

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

Necessary? Okay – let’s assume that makes any sense at all, what about the other fuck? The one with the laser eyes? He wasn’t even attacking you. How was chopping off his head “necessary?”

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Yeah, well. Let’s just say, it felt like a good idea at the time. The opportunity came and I took it.

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

Opportunity? But he was on your side! He was helping us escape!

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Sides? What fucking sides? There’s just me and the door. That asshole? Was in my way.

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

Oh, like me? I’m in your fucking way. What are you going to do about that, asshole?

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Do about that? I saved you, remember? That lame fuck was about to smash your head in. Then while he was reveling in your bloodbath, I could have just as easily stabbed him in his scaly ass face. Then you’d both be dead!

[ Comment (0) ]

Now look at me. Defenseless and at your mercy, like a little fucking melo.

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

Alright, melo. Why did you “save” me?

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

No! Don’t fucking say it like that! I did save you – no sarcasm. That lamefuck was about to make mincemeat out of you.

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

Oh, for fuck’s sake. What do you want, a shiny medal?

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Fuck you!

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

No, fuck you! You killed a bunch of inmates on a break for no good fucking reason and I’m supposed to ignore all that?

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

You don’t have to do shit! Just get the fuck outta here already!

[ Comment (0) ]

Narrator

He takes a step toward her, toward the door. She raises her battle axe. He stops. She pauses, arm cocked and they stare at each other.

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

What, you want me to stay here?

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

One last time – why did you save me?

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Aw geez. Fine. I saved-

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

And before you speak, if you don’t answer my question, right here, right now, then I’ll fucking end you.

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Fuckin-A! Noted. Give me a fucking shot here!

[ Comment (0) ]

The truth is I have no idea why I saved you. A chance came to kill that lamefuck and I acted. Who the fuck knows? Maybe I didn’t want him to have the satisfaction. Maybe your life was more valuable to me alive.

[ Comment (0) ]

I see value in people, you know. Hence, killing off those other fuckwads. They were useless. Not like you – you have value. See?

[ Comment (0) ]

Narrator

Vonkelgore nods. She keeps a white knuckled grip on the battle axe.

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

Ah, so you know who I am then?

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Vonkelgore? Yeah. I’ve heard of you.

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

And you know what I do?

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Yeah. You run the gangs.

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

That’s right. I run the gangs. And, I employ all sorts of creeps like you.

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Like me? I doubt you have anyone nearly as talented as me.

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

Ha. Don’t flatter yourself, shithead. However, and don’t get the wrong idea here, my outfit doesn’t need any help, but, you help me, I help you. See?

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

So, what – I run for you now? Is that how this works?

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

Uh, no. Not really. Let’s just get out of this shithole. When we get back, Raven can get you settled.

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Raven, huh? Okay. Just one thing before we go.

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

What?

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

I’m still defenseless.

[ Comment (0) ]

Narrator

He points to the machete in yellow scaled man’s face.

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

You trust me yet?

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

Trust you? Ha! No. I don’t fucking trust you. You’re an opportunistic psychopath who decapitated people because it felt good. No. I don’t trust you.

[ Comment (0) ]

I’m going to watch your every move and if you fucking turn on me? You die. We both know it.

[ Comment (0) ]

So help yourself, creep.

[ Comment (0) ]

Narrator

The man turns his head to the side, eyes still fixed upon hers. He nods. Vonklegore’s battle axe vanishes. She turns her body toward the doorway and tilts her head as if to say “after you.” But her expression seems to say “if you dare.” The man smirks as he passes her.

[ Comment (0) ]

He props a boot on yellow scaled man’s chest. A patch is sewn on the corpse’s shirt. It reads “Copperwealth Security Forces, Latuno Kanjono Outpost.”

[ Comment (0) ]

Vonkelgore

What’s your name, anyway?

[ Comment (0) ]

Narrator

The man grips the machete lodged in yellow scaled man’s eye socket. With his other hand, he palms the corpse’s forehead and he pushes with his boot until the blade loosens.

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

Me?

[ Comment (0) ]

Narrator

He wipes off the blade on the uniform of the corpse. He turns to Vonkelgore, with a smile.

[ Comment (0) ]

Man with Machete

They call me, “Powderkeg.”
